Herdade do Sobroso marks 25 years of history in the Alentejo
07/07/2025Herdade do Sobroso, located between the River Guadiana and the Serra do Mendro, is marking 25 years of existence in 2025, consolidating a journey marked by its connection to the territory, wine and wine tourism. Founded in 2000 by the architect António Ginestal Machado, the property now covers 1600 hectares of cork oak forest, forest and vineyards and has become a benchmark on the Alentejo wine scene.
Currently under the leadership of Sofia Ginestal Machado and winemaker Filipe Teixeira Pinto, the project stands out for its approach centred on in-depth knowledge of the estate’s micro-parcels and the enhancement of local grape varieties such as Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Touriga Franca, Antão Vaz, Arinto and Perrum. With 60 hectares of vineyards, Herdade do Sobroso has built up a solid range of wines, such as Cellar Selection, Grande Reserva, Reserva, Élevage and Arché.
In addition to wine production, the estate has established itself as a wine tourism destination in the Vidigueira sub-region, offering experiences that include accommodation, regional cuisine and outdoor activities. The offer includes hot air balloon rides, picnics by the river, photographic safaris and stays overlooking the vineyards, reinforcing the link between territory, authenticity and comfort.
In 2025, several events are planned at the estate to mark this milestone. According to Sofia Ginestal Machado, the future of Herdade do Sobroso will be guided by the continuity of the work begun a quarter of a century ago, with a focus on preserving the identity of the place and deepening its family and wine legacy.
