José Maria da Fonseca launches new release

09/02/2026José Maria da Fonseca has unveiled the new Quinta de Camarate Touriga Nacional, a Regional red wine from the Setúbal Peninsula that highlights Portugal’s "queen grape" in a historic terroir, while also presenting a renewed image inspired by the estate’s identity and heritage.

José Maria da Fonseca has just launched Quinta de Camarate Touriga Nacional, a new Regional red from the Setúbal Peninsula that places the Touriga Nacional variety in the spotlight within one of the region’s most emblematic terroirs. This release is accompanied by a totally renewed and distinct image compared to the rest of the range: the traditional label featuring the sheep—the symbol of Quinta de Camarate and its connection to the production of Queijo de Azeitão—now gives way to the façade of the Quinta itself, where Domingos Soares Franco resides, as well as his signature.

Produced at the historic Quinta de Camarate, owned by the Soares Franco family since 1914, this wine reflects the deep bond between the family and the land. The vines, planted in clay-limestone soils near the Serra da Arrábida, benefit from conditions that favor freshness, structure, and balanced grape ripening.

Quinta de Camarate Touriga Nacional presents a modern profile with a strong personality, based primarily on the Touriga Nacional grape, complemented by small percentages of Castelão, Aragonês, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which lend it elegance and immediate pleasure. The wine aged for eight months in French and American oak barrels, in a process designed to enhance the expression of the fruit and the authentic character of the Setúbal Peninsula.

In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby color. On the nose, notes of black cherry, ripe blackberry, dried plum, a subtle touch of cinnamon, and nuances of tobacco stand out. On the palate, the dark fruit remains well-defined, with balanced acidity and soft tannins, resulting in an enveloping texture and a harmonious whole that culminates in an elegant, medium-length finish.

At the table, Quinta de Camarate Touriga Nacional shows great gastronomic versatility, pairing particularly well with roast poultry, feathered game, stews, and meats with intense flavor. It also shows good harmony with traditional cured meats and cheeses, and is a suitable option for more relaxed moments, such as with pizza.

More than just an occasional red, this new Quinta de Camarate Touriga Nacional asserts itself as a wine of origin, with identity and history, inviting the discovery of the Touriga Nacional as expressed in the Setúbal Peninsula and reinforcing the authenticity of Portuguese wines.
