Quinta da Alorna strengthens its commitment to the environment and regenerative agriculture

Sustainability has taken deep root at Quinta da Alorna, in Almeirim. In the last four years, the historic wine estate in the Tejo region has invested around 340,000 euros in sustainable practices, establishing itself as one of the national benchmarks in this area. The investment is reflected in the vineyards, the agricultural crops and the vast area of woodland that makes up the estate of more than 2,500 hectares.

With over 160 hectares of vineyards, Quinta da Alorna is one of only two companies in the municipality with the Sustainable Winegrowing Portugal seal, a distinction awarded in 2024 under the National Benchmark for Sustainability Certification in the Wine Sector, promoted by the Vine and Wine Institute and ViniPortugal.

In addition to the sustainability certification, the company also has IFS Food certification, guaranteeing high standards of food safety and quality in more than 1.4 million bottles it bottles every year.

Pedro Mascarenhas, Quinta da Alorna’s Agricultural Director, highlights the company’s commitment to regenerative agriculture and precision farming: “We seek to adopt practices that reinforce soil sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of our activity. We invest in equipment and services that allow us to collect data, assess impacts and measure productivity efficiently.”

The good practices extend to the 500 hectares of annual irrigated crops and the 1,900 hectares of forest, where the property maintains certifications such as PRODI (integrated production), UEA (efficient use of water) and FSC (responsible forest management). The forest, made up of cork oak forests, pine forests (with certified production of organic pine nuts) and eucalyptus trees for paper pulp, plays an essential role in retaining carbon, preventing erosion and promoting biodiversity.

“It’s a very well implemented forest and one of the lungs of Almeirim,” stresses Pedro Mascarenhas.

Another pillar of Quinta da Alorna’s environmental strategy is the production of clean energy. Since 2013, seven photovoltaic plants have been installed, preventing the emission of around 170 tons of CO2 per year and helping to reduce the property’s ecological footprint.

With a legacy of more than 300 years, Quinta da Alorna is reinforcing its commitment to the future. The commitment to sustainability will continue in 2025, with new investments planned to consolidate a more balanced, regenerative and environmentally friendly agriculture.
